Early Spring Newsletter 2015 Design • Build • Maintain • Enjoy   Just Ask Brad:   Q. I’ve mulched my beds for years and they look worn and  tired, what should I do? A. If there is more than 3” of  buildup, rake away the top layer, be sure not to disturb any  plant roots before applying a fresh topdressing of mulch.  Q. I have gray patches in my lawn that look matted down,  what is it? A. Snow mold. When we have a cover of snow  for long periods of time, mold growth can occur underneath  the blanket of snow. To prevent: Make sure to keep your  lawn cut and clear of debris heading into the winter. When  temperatures begin to warm up, spread out the piles of snow  to encourage even melting. To cure: Loosely rake to  encourage drying and apply a light coat of topsoil and seed.  Q. It’s a nice day and I have Spring fever. When can I start  planting annuals? A. Typically annuals shouldn’t be planted  until after Mother’s day. Cool season annuals such as Pansies,  Viola’s, Dianthus, Dusty Miller, Sweet Alyssum and  Snapdragons can be planted when they start appearing at  garden centers. If you decide to get a jump start, keep supplies  on hand to cover them if the forecast is for a hard frost.                                                                                 - Brad Stephenson -Secretary / Treasurer Early Spring Tips from The Weise’man:  - Start the season off right with a clean swept lawn that won’t clog up your  mowers. Beds should be cleared to allow plants to breathe and have the  best light exposure for optimal new growth.   - Now is the time to begin treatments on your lawn, beginning with crabgrass  prevention. For best results, this should be done before the end of April.    - Mulching should be done as needed to maintain a 2-3” cover throughout  plant beds. Be sure not to build it up around the crowns of plants. Mulch is  your best bed cover option for moisture retention and weed suppression.  - Pruning, remove broken limbs and branches from trees and shrubs before  new growth emerges. Here is our plan for healthier plants: 5 Visits- Below is an outline of each visit.  During each visit, our  technician will also inspect your plants for possible issues affecting  their health.
